Upgrading

Upgrading comes in all forms from putting new stuff in your PC (to make it run faster) to adding new peripherals like printers, scanners, cameras, etc.

When considering upgrades to improve speed I would like to comment here that computer speed is determined by a combination of five things:  the CPU, RAM, motherboard chipset, hard drive, and, most important, user maintenance/tune-up (see PC Tune-up).  The best combination of the hardware mentioned is of little value if the software isn't properly maintained.

The "peripheral" upgrades can be checked out by going to my pages that deal with the specific item you are interested in PC Peripherals or Contact Me.

To people that have an old PC (older than a Pentium anything) and are emotionally attached to it and just want to make it `run better' I say "forget it" because you can't put Porsche engines in Model T Fords.  However, if you have a decent PC, there are simple things that you can do that can improve your performance a lot.

I am a member of www.allexperts.com and the most frequent questions I get are from PC users wanting to upgrade their RAM and/or hard drives - and they don't know where to start!  This is the easiest and most cost effective way of improving PC performance - and I have spent a lot of time researching (and experimenting with) these areas.  The results are included in Real Memory and Hard Drives in this web site and I have even included `installation procedures'.
